Where the data comes from

Crime figures are NZ Police recorded victimisations, published monthly. Population figures are from the 2023 Census (Stats NZ). The data is processed by our sister site, crimestats.co.nz. Police data to August 2026

How the safety score works

Each recorded crime is weighted by how serious it is, using the NZ Crime Harm Index, so an assault counts for more than a stolen bike. We add up that harm over the last 12 months and divide it by the number of residents.

The score from 0 to 100 shows how a suburb compares with the rest of New Zealand. A score of 80 means the suburb has less crime harm per resident than about 80% of suburbs.

What the score can't tell you

• Only crime reported to Police is counted. Some crime, such as family violence, is under-reported.
• Crime is counted where it happens. Town centres and shopping areas rank low because of shoplifting, even when few people live there.
• We list but don't rank areas with fewer than 500 residents, areas with no matched crime records yet, and areas whose Police records stop partway through the year (usually because the boundary was redrawn).
• A score describes an area, not a street. It is a starting point, not a guarantee.
